Last Volvo S60 rolls off production line


Yesterday (31st March), the last S60 sedan rolled off Volvo's Ghent plant in Sweden as the carmaker is getting ready to create space and capacity for the model's successor that is scheduled to be launched in 2010.

Volvo's new executive sport sedan will be based on the S60 concept shown in Detroit earlier this year. The first generation S60 was introduced in 2000 and during its 9 year run, Volvo built 578,292 S60 units of the car, with the best year being 2001 with 108,906 units and the worst, 2008, when a mere 6,205 S60s were produced.

"The Volvo S60 was an important model for Volvo Cars Gent," said managing director of Volvo Cars Ghent Derek Jessiman. "Now we will focus on a flawless launch of the new S60."

Kia unveils new wind-assisted Areo Soul











It's not only Hyundai that is planning special editions of vehicles, sister car firm, Kia is set to introduce a new wind assisted aero Soul. The Korean automaker unveiled the wind-assisted version of the Soul, with sales to begin next month.

The vehicle uses a low-cost system that can mount to any products in Kia's line-up. Available with new cars and retroactively, the Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line uses sensors to detect wind speed as the Soul is driving down the highway. Once wind speed is at a strong enough rate, panels built into the bumpers are deployed to harness the wind power to assist in speeding up the car.

This system does not just work when the car is running at speed. When braking or decelerating the panels also pop out like drag chutes to help slow the car down. Also part of the system is a reverse thruster that drops down from behind the exhaust pipe to reduce the strain on the brakes.

From her Mabuk, Korea, office, Kia green-technology engineer Avril Babo said, "The big problem with most emission reduction systems is that they are expensive. We wanted to come up with an answer that didn't cost the earth and could be retrospectively applied to cars already on the road."

Testing in Nong Dam shows that fuel efficiency can be increased by 25%, with emissions reduced by as much as 40%. When using the system while on a severe downhill slope, fuel use and CO2 emissions drops to almost nothing. The system is even beneficial if you live in a calmer environment. Just using the system to help braking can reduce fuel use by 10%, decrease emissions by 15%, and extend brake-pad life by nearly 50%.

The Kia Aero-Soul concept, with the Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line, or A.P.R.I.L., will be available shortly. Pricing will be revealed closer to the release date.

KIA UNVEIL DRAMATIC WIND-ASSISTED AERO-SOUL

In a dramatic move aimed at delivering environmental benefits without expensive technology Kia has revealed its new Aero-Soul concept that reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with a simple and low-cost system called Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line.

Although unveiled on the company's stylish and fun cross-over Soul the patented system can be easily extended to all the company's vehicles and will even be available as a bolt-on accessory for vehicles already in use.

The system relies on small sensors built into the front and rear bumpers which monitor external wind speed and deploy panels when the wind is sufficient to provide additional directional impetus according to the car's behaviour.

So at cruising speeds if the wind behind the car is strong - such as in winter gales - the panels will harness wind power to provide forward motion. If the car is slowing or under braking the panels will deploy to provide additional retardation effort. Additionally a small electrically powered baffle can be lowered just behind the exhaust pipe under harsh braking to provide the kind of "reverse-thrust" normally associated with aircraft during landing - this element will only be available as a factory-fitted device.

Systems Manager Avril Babo at Kia's Eco-Technology Research Institute in Mabuk, south of Seoul said: "The big problem with most emission reduction systems is that they are expensive. We wanted to come up with an answer that didn't cost the earth and could be retrospectively applied to cars already on the road.

"Tests of this system at our Nong Dam facility have shown that during windy weather fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 25% and emissions by anything up 40%. Even in calm weather using the system simply under braking can result in reductions of 10% and 15% respectively. In perfect conditions - downhill with a following wind fuel use and exhaust gasses can be reduced to almost zero! Plus, brake-pad life can be extended by anything up to 50%depending on driver behaviour, she added.

The new A.P.R.I.L. system will be available on all vehicles ordered after midnight on March 31, 2010 and the accessory pack will be available the following day. Prices will be announced in due course.

Hyundai i10 conversion released


Despite some saying that the global downturn is slowly turning around, Hyundai UK will produce a conversion range based upon the ever-popular i10 city car, which is squarely aimed at world and religious leaders for those who are affected by the credit crisis.

The i10 conversion range will use the 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine that emits 119g/km of CO2 and returns 56.5mpg combined. In the pipeline is a 32 foot Pink limo. All i10 city-cars come with a 5 year warranty. The special Pope Mobile i10 is finished in glossy white paint and features front fog lamps, alloy wheels & an electrically adjustable rear seat.

New Hyundai i10 conversion range set to prove popular with world and religious leaders

Hyundai is proud to announce the launch of a new i10 model specifically targeted at the booming market among world and religious leaders.

The first demonstrator is due to be trialled by a German customer who currently resides in Italy.

The Korean manufacturer has identified that many global leaders are becoming concerned about the emissions from large limousines and adapted 4x4 vehicles which traditionally form the basis of all presidential, papal and prime ministerial transport.

In addition, the global financial crisis has made it necessary for political and faith leaders to adopt less ostentatious lifestyles, including more cost effective vehicular solutions.

As a result, Hyundai is to build a range of specially-adapted vehicles using the acclaimed i10 city car as their basis. Powered by the new 1.2-litre Kappa engine, the special i10s produce only 119g/km of CO2 and are easier to manoeuvre among large crowds of adoring subjects.

The first of this special range has just been completed by Hyundai's skilled coachbuilders. The roof of the i10 has been specially raised in order to accommodate the relevant VIP in either a standing or seated position, while the rear seats have been swapped for a single, electrically adjustable item from Hyundai's flagship Grandeur.

As a demonstration of the bespoke options available, all leather has been removed from the seat facings and the upholstery is made up of parts of a tapestry woven by monks from the Indian city of Utta Bullacs. The cloth was nicknamed ‘holy sheet' by Hyundai's specialist trimmers.

Although details of the security package are confidential, this special i10 has features over and above the standard model's central locking. Part of this involves an innovative, lightweight composite armour built into the top of the car. This material, named Armour Protected Roof Integrated Lining®, was originally developed for use in offshore powerboat racing in Switzerland.

In order to meet recycling and sustainability targets, part of the armour is made from a fully organic material. The ‘string' part of runner beans is actually lighter and stronger than Kevlar when woven into matting and encased in resin made from tree sap. The panels of Weave BeanTM add just 25g to the weight of the i10.

Hyundai's head of specialist vehicle conversions, Paul Legg, said "traditional personal movement solutions for global leaders are no longer seen as appropriate. The i10 is the perfect car for any ruler wanting to draw a line under excessive spending."

Other conversions currently being developed include a pink 32-foot stretched i10 limo being built for Ben Datroof, lead singer of top-selling Dutch boy band Pork Pie. The band's manager, Mick Etayk, said "The Hyundai will be particularly appropriate transport for Pork Pie. There are five boys in the band, so they'll have ten eyes in an i10!"

As with all Hyundai cars, the i10 special conversions are covered by a five year, manufacturer-backed warranty which is fully transferable to new owners after general elections, military coups and early evictions from reality TV programmes.

Vorsteiner Release New Body Kit for BMW E90 M3 Sedan


California-based Vorsteiner prefers working on the German brands BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Having already provided kit for the BMW E92 M3 (coupe) Vorsteiner has now released a new lightweight aero kit for the E90 M3 (sedan).


The package is made up of parts like a carbon-fiber add-on spoiler, a carbon fiber rear diffuser with three integrated fins and a carbon fiber boot lid with a lip spoiler. The latter acts to enhance down force and weighs over 35 percent less than the stock unit which is made of steel.


Thanks to these components the lighter-than-average Vorsteiner M3 sedan should be better placed to exploit BMW's factory 4.0-litre V8 with its 414 bhp (309 kW; 420 PS) and 400Nm of torque.

Hyundai released New i10 conversion


Hyundai went a little further with their April Fools' Day joke and announced that they offer a Hyundai i10 Papa Mobil conversion kit specifically targeted at the world and religious leaders. The Hyundai i10 Papa Mobil even has the V471 CAN registration number. The Korean manufacturer says the Hyundai i10 Papa Mobil is still on trial in Italy where's being tested by a German customer.

The Hyundai i10 Papa Mobil is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa engine that emits 119g/km of CO2 and the company says it's very easy to maneuver among large crowds of adoring subjects.

The Hyundai i10 Papa Mobil is also equipped with various security systems among which being a lightweight composite armor built into the top of the car. The material, called Armor Protected Roof Integrated Lining, was developed for offshore powerboat racing in Switzerland.

New Car: 2010 Subaru Legacy
















Subaru has released details of the 2010 Legacy ahead of its public debut at the 2009 New York International motorshow. A concept car was previewed at the 2009 North American International motorshow in Detroit. This is the 5th generation Legacy and it features technologies not seen in mid-sized sedans before.

But some of the familiar stuff includes boxer engines and Subaru's symmetrical AWD. For the U.S market, in which introduces the Legacy arrives in dealerships after the show, 3 engines will be available.

The first is a naturally-aspirated 2.5i. It produces 170bhp and 170 lb-ft with 230Nm of torque. Transmission options are a 6 speed manual and the new Subaru Lineartronic CVT. Next is a 2.5 GT turbo with 26b5hp and 258 lb-ft with 350Nm of torque. Only the 6 speed manual is available on the GT. Subaru says this transmission is 25kg lighter than the previous one. Lastly, the 3.6R with a 5 speed automatic replaces the old 3.0 litre. It makes 256bhp and 247 lb-ft with 335Nm maximum torque.

The new Legacy is 35mm longer, 90mm wider and 80mm higher than the outgoing car, bring the overall vehicle size to 4,735mm, 1,820mm and 1,505 mm (length/width/height). Wheelbase measures at 2,750mm. A MacPherson-type strut suspension is used at the front and a new double-wishbone suspension is mounted to the rear. The 2.5i receives 16" alloy wheels while the 2.5GT makes do with 18" alloy wheels.

Some of the interior features available are an electronic parking brake, 10 way driver's seat and a new 3 spoke steering wheel. Safety features installed include ABS with EBD, hill assist and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). Further U.S specifications include auto headlamps and front windscreen wipers and 60/40 split folding rear seats with integrated cupholder in rear armrest. Options include a Harman-Kardon audio system and a power sunroof.

The Legacy lands in Europe in October 2009. Today's Legacy uses the 2.0 litre petrol and diesel units which will be used in the 2010 model.

Subaru UK has been struggling with exchange rate woes, which have forced it to axe the Impreza diesel here. 'We're hoping to bring it in this autumn,' said a spokeswoman. 'But we've been struggling to make the numbers add up.'
